Where can you buy official Acropolis tickets?

Online at tickets.hh.gr, the shop of the official Hellenic Heritage site hh.gr, or at the ticket offices at the two entrances. Anything else is a reseller, even when the web address sounds official.

The Hellenic Heritage portal was presented in February 2026 and took over from hhticket.gr in April 2026; the old address now redirects to it. It is run by the Ministry of Culture and ODAP, the state body behind ticketing for more than 350 Greek sites and museums. Some slot availability glitches were reported after the switch, and forum regulars say they were sorted out by July 2026.

Search results are full of sites with Acropolis and tickets in the name that look official and are not. They resell the same entry with a mark-up. Can you buy Acropolis tickets at the entrance?

Yes. There are ticket offices at the main west entrance and at the south-slope entrance, but you get whichever slot is still open, and on a busy summer morning that may not be the next one.

The two entrances are about a 10-minute walk apart. The west entrance, below the Propylaea, is the main one and the busier of the two, with queues of 20 to 30 minutes reported at the ticket window in high season. The south-slope entrance, near the Acropolis Museum and the Theatre of Dionysus, is usually quieter. Do Acropolis tickets sell out?

The popular slots do. Since 2023 the site admits at most 20,000 people a day in hourly slots, and the 08:00 slot and cruise-day mornings go first from April to October.

• The cap is firm: it applies to every ticket type, including tour groups, so resellers and tours draw on the same daily total.
• 08:00 goes first: it has the largest allocation of the day, but it is also the slot everyone wants.
• Groups fill late morning: organised and cruise groups make up about half of all visitors.
• Late afternoon is easier: slots from about 16:00 in summer usually still have space when mornings are gone.
• Winter is relaxed: from November to March, weekday slots rarely run out.

What does the time slot on an Acropolis ticket mean?

It is your entry window: you can pass the gate from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after the time on your ticket. Once inside, you can stay as long as you like until closing.

Staff are strict about the window and turn early arrivals away, so there is no point queuing an hour ahead. Other Greek sites allow an hour either side; the Acropolis does not. Arrive at the entrance a few minutes before your window opens, because the security check comes before the gate. If you are running late, keep in mind that the window closes 15 minutes after your slot and the ticket can't be moved to another time.

Is it worth buying Acropolis tickets in advance?

Yes, from April to October and on any day you want the first slot. On winter weekdays buying at the gate usually works, but a ticket on your phone still spares you the window queue.

Because official tickets can't be refunded or changed, buy once your day in Athens is fixed, and check the weather forecast for the heat if you travel in July or August. You will see skip-the-line on many listings. It means you already hold a timed ticket, so you skip the ticket-office queue. Everyone, with any ticket, still passes security and enters at the booked slot.
